A Clash of UK Punk and Jamaican Roots:
Canada’s ‘The Next Best Thing’ on Tour in Your Backyard

Working Machine is the third album for TNBT. Besides ska and reggae, Working
Machine reeks of funk, soul, experimental and even a little heavy rock.
Similar to NY icons The Slackers, they concentrate on the live performance
with lengthy sets involving the crowd. Like Ween, they take all requests,
even improvising songs on the spot as diverse as “Gin and Juice”, “Simmer
Down”, “Red Red Wine”, old Zeppelin songs or even a Jay-Z track. Colin
notes, “We play three-set gigs and throw in several unlikely covers. We like
to be able to play about any reggae song shouted out at a show. Actually,
we’ll try to cover any song requested at our shows.”
TNBT concert and party launching Club 107’s summer season, June 9, 10:30P.

The Next Best Thing blends the best of reggae and punk into their own sound.
So, save yourself the airfare and check out some
damn good music right here in your own backyard.

THE BLOOD LINES - NEW BAND, NEW CD, NEW TOUR

THE BLOOD LINES - TORONTO, ON @ KATHEDRAL JUNE 13

We started playing together late in 2005, but there was a line-up
change, etc. and we officially formed and named the band in March of
2006. It's wierd to think that was less than three months ago,
because since then we haven't stopped working.

The night we named the band was the same night we bought the domain
www.thebloodlines.com and set up a myspace account that simply said
"Songs coming soon". The foundation was in place and the next day we
began booking this tour for June that is taking us all the way to
Toronto and New York and back. We were setting up a deadline for
ourselves, hoping we'd make it.

Once we had the booking underway, we decided we should probably play a
show and test the waters. So we lined up a show locally for May 6th
that would be our first show ever. It ended up being packed and the
reception was great. Since then, we played one other show with The
Constantines and Chad VanGaalen (May 19).

We knew we wanted an album by the time we cast off for tour (June 2nd)
but as of May 8th, we hadn't begun recording it yet. So, we got to
work. Doing everything ourselves, we recorded, mixed and mastered a
12 song album in a period of 9 days. During the mixing, we were still
coming up with ideas and quickly adding the final touches as we rushed
to meet the deadline that would allow us to get the CD back from the
manufacturer in time for our tour. Somehow, after all the rush, we
were all 100% happy with our work - a little delirious from lack of
sleep (22 hours straight mixing) - but nonetheless satisfied and
gratified.

This week leading up to our departure will entail folding, gluing,
stamping and stuffing cardboard CD cases and sending them off to
various locations across Canada (let me know if you'd like one), while
we prep our van for tour. I forgot to mention we booked the whole
tour without a mode of transportation. We assumed we'd be able to
find a van in time, but it was getting REALLY tight. Two days ago our
luck pulled through and we found the perfect tour van for $800. It's
true that energy through a system will cause the system to organize
itself.

Now, we can't wait to play. Here are the tour dates.

JUNE 2 - REGINA, SK - O'HANLONS
JUNE 5 - WINDSOR, ON - THE AVALON FRONT
JUNE 6 - LONDON, ON - CALL THE OFFICE
JUNE 7 - HAMILTON, ON - THE CASBAH
JUNE 11 - NEW YORK, NY - PIANOS
JUNE 12 - OTTAWA, ON - ZAPHOD BEEBLEBROX
JUNE 13 - TORONTO, ON - KATHEDRAL
JUNE 14 - SUDBURY, ON - THE TOWNEHOUSE
JUNE 15 - SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - DOWNBEAT
JUNE 16 - THUNDER BAY, ON - APOLLO
JUNE 17 - WINNIPEG, MB - DYLAN O'CONNORS

We realize that you've never heard of Richard Swift. We here at Secretly Canadian will change that. In fact, Richard Swift will consume your life. "The Collection Vol. 1" is a great place to start. "The Novelist" - Swift's highly acclaimed, succinct, eight song, nineteen minute and thirty-eight second-long, audiophile archivist experiment - immediately ushers the listener deep into the recesses of Swift's creative core for a kaleidoscopic trip aboard an intergalactic vaudevillian steamship with a speakeasy code-word. Yet, "The Novelist" is only one small manifestation of Swift's entire musical manifesto and only one-half of this double-disc set. "Walking Without Effort" - the second disc in the two-disc set - is the first, and perhaps most deceptively complex, yet decisively understated, Swift release to date. A slight step eastward from the eclectic musings of "The Novelist", "Walking Without Effort" intentionally paints another image, and baptizes believers born-again into Swift's unique brand of sonic schizophrenia. Gramophones are replaced by 8-tracks and Persian rugs are covered with shag, as Swift nods to the early 70's solo efforts of McCartney and Harrison, while waving to Burt Bacharach and Van Dyke Parks. They're just passersby as he drives down main street in a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. Don't be scared, be excited that Swift intends on writing and releasing music until the day he dies and intends to never make the same record twice... not even on a double-disc.

Harmony Trowbridge @ NXNE - invitation

She can floor you with her loveliness. NNNN" NOW Magazine

"So, there's this Harmony Trowbridge dynamo. She spits mad lyrical dynamite. Her voice makes boys go crazy and she is the first sexy thing to come out of Toronto since Buddy Cole." Pop Montreal

Harmony Trowbridge

@ NXNE

Saturday, June 10th

@ The Free Times Cafe

320 College Street

11PM

Harmony Trowbridge is a fugitive mango in January. Two lone snowflakes in July. A girl who writes singular indie-pop songs and performs them in a duo with her husband, Adam. She has an EP called Amoraphobe where she is singing
sad love songs by herself. She has a new CD coming up -- it will have a bunch of new songs and she won't be by herself this time. Harmony's music is a witch doctor's poultice applied directly to the heart in need of repair.
You should go see her show. It's good, and you might cry. You need a good cry. Good music for: people who are/were bullied and/or who are/were bullies AND those who didn't go traveling after highschool AND the sad. Also enjoyed by: the popular AND the athletic.

Mariposa presents breakthrough group Spiral Beach and more.....

Eugene Ripper's Fast Folk Underground

ALL-AGES show at the Drake this Wednesday, May 17th

Eclectic road-show is returning, with Spiral Beach and Clare Love

Eugene Ripper's Fast Folk Underground has over the years built a reputation
for bringing superb edgy and/or emerging talent to the public. This time
out Ripper is featuring two youthful acts....

Spiral Beach Having grown up in the exuberant chaos of the Canadian folk
music community, members - Daniel and Airick Woodhead, Maddy Wilde and
Dorian Thornton - spent their formative years hanging around backstage jams
at festivals across the country. As a group these young performers create
edgy and inventive pop music that draws inspiration from the Beatles,
Talking Heads and Radiohead. Their distinctive sound combines a strong
groove with clever harmonies. They have just released their self-titled CD
and are booked for the 2006 Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia, July 7-8-9.
http://www.spiralbeach.com

Clare Love - direct from her Soma-a-go-go performance at Loco Local
Festival, this ultra talented singer songwriter performs solo not to be
missed.

Eugene Ripper edgy roots rocker weighs in to promote the release of his
new EP ³Crackle². http://www.eugeneripper.com

When: This Wednesday, May 17th, 2006 - Showtime 9 PM

Where: The Drake Hotel, 1150 Queen Street West in Toronto

student/senior card. This is an ALL-AGES show.

Festival passes are available for the 2006 Mariposa Folk Festival, Canada's
oldest folk music festival... details at www.mariposafolkfestival.com
<http://www.mariposafolkfestival.com>

A Brief history of the Fast Folk Underground:
Throughout his recording and performing career, Eugene Ripper has been
active on local club scenes in Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax and New York as a
causal provocateur of these underground events - a series of roving
postmodern hoots that have bounced around the scene for 20 years. A list of
featured appearances over the years paints and intriguing picture if you
are into snapshots of moving riversŠlikes of The Sadies, Young and Sexy,
Lowest of the Low, Dave Bidini, hHead, Herald Nix, Don Ross, Mr Wrong, The
ids, Bobby Wiseman, I Braineater, Radiogram, The Royal Grand Prix,

Downchild set for rare date

DOWNCHILD SET FOR HORSESHOE DATE IN TORONTO THIS FRIDAY MARCH 24 Downchild,
which has long called itself "Canada's blues band" is set to play a rare
Toronto date this coming Friday March 24. While the band's leader, Donnie
"Mr. Downchild" Walsh spends his winters in Costa Rica, the band's members
all live in the Toronto area - but Downchild only plays two or three times
each year in the city. The March 24 date brings the band back to Toronto's
"legendary" Horseshoe Tavern for the first time in several years. Says
Walsh: "The 'Shoe is a terrific place to play, and the club's got a long
history with blues artists like James Cotton, and we're proud to be part of
that." The band will play material from its latest album, the Juno-nominated
"Come Right In." WHO: Downchild, Canada's blues band WHAT: Straight ahead
good-time rockin' blues - played with heart and passion WHY: The band needs
to play Toronto twice a year: This is one of those times WHERE: The
Legendary Horseshoe Tavern WHEN: Friday March 24. Doors at 9:00 p.m. sets at

SNOOVY at the Tinfoil Hat Party - April 1st

Fasten your tinfoil hats, its Snoovy time! Funkless, the brainchild of
celebrated Toronto artist Cynthia Gould, welcomes Snoovy as musical guest at
their second annual Tinfoil Hat Making party. This April Fool's Day protect

quirky and creative musical offerings are the ideal accompaniment to this
unique way to enjoy a night. There are prizes to be won for sculpting the
most impressive and ingenious hat out of tinfoil, but everyone in the
audience wins when Snoovy sings. Snoovy has toured the country extensively,
delighting old fans and winning new ones wherever she goes with her
trademark speed-folk sound. Her latest album, Twenty/Twenty further refined
her style by bringing in producer Chris Bartos (Sarah Slean, Queensyze) who
melds her diverse influences into a seamless aural treat. Twenty/Twenty

A legend in the North American rock scene, Nash the slash reveals his
secrets on how to rock it out on the electric violin. Nash is a pioneer in
the music industry since the 1970¹s. Although he prefers to be called a

all to himself. Whether it¹s on stage, providing music to feature films or
recording issues, Nash has all the answers.

Shane Cook Fun Playing Fiddle

April 29, 2006 2:00 to 4:00 PM

At the age of 24, Shane is already Canada¹s most highly awarded old-time
fiddler and a master of several fiddle styles including Irish, Scottish,
French-Canadian, Texan, and Bluegrass. He is the only person ever to win the
top honour at all four of the most prestigious old-time fiddle competitions
in North America. Bring your fiddle and learn with the best!

May 6, 2006 2:00 to 4:00 PM

Violinist and Royal Conservatory teacher Corey Gemmell will introduce the
violin to those who are just beginning or to those who are interested in
starting the violin. Corey will cover topics such as: how to care for your
violin, violin maintenance, should I rent or buy, what to look for in a
violin, and basic violin instruction. Long & McQuade can provide loaner
violins to those 6 years and up who register by Tuesday May 2nd. Please
contact the Bloor Street Store Band & Orchestral Department to register.

bassist Chris Minh Doky to Toronto from the jazz scene in New York City.
Chris is recognized as one of North America¹s top bass players, often
working with the most significant jazz artists of today. In addition to jazz
topics, Chris will discuss how to cross over from electric bass guitar to
acoustic upright bass. Don¹t miss this opportunity to interact with one of
the greats!

DiggingRoots headlines Hugh's Room concert

Media information/For immediate release
Please add to coming events listings
DiggingRoots headlines at Hugh's Room
on bill with Treasa Levasseur; return
concert set for Thursday March 30
DiggingRoots - which recently scored strongly at a completely sold out
concert with Ndidi Onukwulu at Hugh's Room - are returning to the acoustic
music venue to headline their own show on Thursday March 30. Their special
guest will be Treasa Levasseur, who recently launched her debut CD, "Not a
Straight Line"
Formed by the songwriting team of ShoShona Kish and Raven
Kanatakta, DiggingRoots is the result of seven years of performing across
Canada with side trips to Hawaii, Spain and New Zealand.
The pair launched their first CD, "seeds" in January, on the Jericho
Beach label, the Vancouver-based home for songwriter James Keelaghan and The
Wailin' Jennys.
DiggingRoots draws on the Aboriginal heritage of the songwriters, in
addition to a range of blues, world music, jazz and folk influences ranging
from Nina Simone to Jimi Hendrix and Son House and Ricky Lee Jones, not to
mention pioneer British rock bands and mainstream jazz players.

Who: DiggingRoots (ShoShona Kish & Raven Kanatakta) with their band and
special guest Treasa Levasseur.

What: Eclectic music that rocks out, touches any number of roots and
features astonishing vocals, powerful guitar work and accessible songs that
ring true.

Why: A follow-up to their recent s.r.o. double bill with Ndidi Onukwulu.

When: Thursday March 30; show at 8:30 p.m., doors at 6 p.m.

Where: Hugh's Room, 2261 Dundas St. W., south of Bloor St. W.
How Much: Tickets $10.00 in advance/$12.00 at door, available at Hugh's Room
Ph: 416-531-6604 or www.huighsroom.com. Dinner reservations recommended.

Biographical notes:

Shoshona and Raven describe their songs as "heartbeat music"; they come by
the name of their band honestly, since their songs touch so many roots and
so many genres of music. Currently completing a first series of programmes,
Nish, for the Rogers Cable network - the show has been renewed for another
two years - the pair have become articulate spokespeople for their music,
and the many influences that have helped create it. This may indeed be
"music that matters," but it's also entertaining and original, honed by
dozens of club, concert and festival appearances.

Treasa Levasseur is a music therapist, and one of the freshest new voices on
the Toronto music scene. Heavily influenced by classic old-school rhythm and
blues, she's appeared on dozens of independent recordings as a backup singer
and musicians; she's currently marking the release of her first solo album,
for which she wrote all but two of the heart-felt, powerful songs.

Hi all - just a quick update to everyone on the mailing list, to keep you up
to speed on the latest exciting MUSIC news on this end. Thanks for all your
support to date.

SHOWS BOOKED WITH THE CANADIAN EMBASSY IN PANAMA - I'll be doing 2 shows in
Panama (Panama City and Boquete) with the Canadian Embassy. Shows will take
place in late March, and will feature local session players in the backing
band. I'll be hanging out in Panama for 2 weeks taking in the +30C , blue
sky climate - which will be a lovely change after touring Saskatchewan in
the winter.... This is officially, the furthest South that this tour will
take me.....

CBC RECORDING CONFIRMED: The popular CBC radio show 'Gallery' will feature
a live recording (with studio audience) that we'll do from their Regina
studios, this May. It will air in late summer (check back to my website for
exact airing date). We'll be performing songs from the new album, 'Songs
from Highway 15". I've hooked up with some excellent session players from
Saskatchewan for this show. Should be a fun night. If you're in
Saskatchewan, admission is FREE and it's RUSH seating with doors opening at
7pm for the 8pm taping.

WESTERN CANADA TOUR UPDATE – The first leg of the Western Canada tour is now
done. 19 of 20 shows were completed (one re-scheduled due to shitty
weather - ick) - and lots more bookings have been confirmed for April
through to the fall. We'll be performing in Sask, and also in AB and MB.
If you're in those provinces, stay up to date with the performance calendar
on my website at www.jeffstraker.com/schedule

CD AVAILABLE for purchase ON WEBSITE: Thanks to everyone who has gone to
shows and to my website and bought the new CD. I appreciate the time some of
you have taken to send me msg’s about it as well. For those of you who've
been thinking about getting it - come on (!) you know you wanna! You can
hear sound-bytes at www.jeffstraker.com/listen.php

All the best to you for a great spring. I'll be in Toronto from March 1-17
packing up my place, vacating it in April. Drop me a line if you are in the
T-dot. Say hi.
Stay cool. Cheers
Jeff

Initially recognized by Toronto audiences propelling the David S. Ware Quartet (Next Wave), and baptizing the What.Next era leading his own trio w/ William Parker and Susie Ibarra into sold out/SRO landmark gigs at 179 Richmond Street – NY’s pugilistic pianist Matthew Shipp of late renowned for his signature Thirsty Ear Blue Series portfolio – returns in an absolute centre ring concert in the lofty acoustics of St. George-the-Martyr.

Matthew Shipp's piano playing has been called "apocalyptic" (Jazziz), and "like looking up suddenly and discovering a solar eclipse" (Village Voice). The New York Times calls him "the most significant pianist in avant-garde jazz since Cecil Taylor." An architect of often dramatically-layered improvisations, Shipp creates ecstatic music that has found fans in the unlikely parallel worlds of jazz and alternative rock. His recordings on (former Black Flag vocalist) Henry Rollins' 21361 label helped expose Shipp's contagious energy to listeners beyond his jazz loyalists, a wave of releases on the Hat Art label, Aum Fidelity, ECM (w/Roscoe Mitchell Nonet) plus his 1999 Thirsty Ear debut and nurturing of the Blue Series secure his place among the most adventurous spirits in the music today.

Mr. Shipp has ranged far and wide, embracing everything from modern classical music, funk, electronica, avant-garde jazz, ambient music and hip-hop to good old hard bop. He has been a prolific collaborator, most often with fellow David S. Ware Quartet member William Parker, and also with a long list that includes Mat Maneri, Wadada Leo Smith, Roy Campbell, Roscoe Mitchell, DJ Spooky, Spring Heel Jack, and many others. from Parry Gettelman, The Dallas Morning News

"I think in big, sweeping landscapes." says Shipp, who feels his reputation as an avant-garde player is unwarranted. "I like to consider myself at the forefront of the language and I try to be free, but I don't think of myself as someone like a Cecil Taylor. I'm just trying to be me. I'm as concerned with the melodic as I am with being in the vortex of a whirlwind."

One is the latest title in the Blue Series that Shipp started at Thirsty Ear in 2000 when the rock indie music.monstersandcritics.com formed a jazz division. "Peter wanted a different approach, so he brought me in." says Shipp, who came to Thirsty Ear's attention after recording for 21361 label, which is marketed and distributed by Thirsty Ear.
from Dan Ouellette, monstersandcritics.com Jan 23 2006

"Shipp unveil(s) his first collection of original solo material in nearly a decade. As such, One simultaneously serves as both a meditative re-centering and as a further departure, with Matthew quietly redirecting his familiar post-Cecil Taylor vocabulary towards a singular form of numinous chamber music."
Matt Murphy, pitchforkmedia.com - 31 Jan 2006

"Matthew Shipp is One impressive performer... Few listeners ever have encountered pianist Shipp the way they did Friday night at HotHouse: alone at a piano, improvising for more than an hour..."
Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune - 13 Feb 2006

WHO: Amer Diab, Violet Ray, Jim Armstrong, David Janes and Rob Maurin
WHAT: Sonic Deli Records Benefit Concert for Epilepsy Toronto
WHERE: Stones Place – 1255 Queen St West

FEBRUARY 22ND, 2006 - TORONTO - Sonic Deli Records presents a full night of
singer-songwriters, in support of Epilepsy Toronto. The benefit concert will
take place at Stone's Place (1255 Queen Street West) on Friday March 31st
and will feature the talents of five local musicians, including: Amer Diab,
Violet Ray, Jim Armstrong, David James and Rob Maurin. Music begins at 9
p.m., tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door. A non-profit community
agency, Epilepsy Toronto is celebrating their 50th Anniversary this March,
during National Epilepsy Awareness Month. The charity has chosen musician
Jim Armstrong to speak and participate in all promotional events this
spring. To raise awareness and educate the public, he will share his
difficulties in overcoming the obstacles of this potentially debilitating
condition. Jim Armstrong has struggled with severe epilepsy since the age
of six. Two years ago, Jim underwent state-of-the-art brain surgery to
reduce the intensity of his seizures and their frequency. Three months
later, he was at the soundboard working on his first CD compilation of
eleven Toronto songwriters and performers. Released in April of 2005, BROWN
BAG LUNCH also marked the launch of the independent record label, Sonic Deli
Records. Four of the eleven artists are back to donate their music for a
good cause. Each singer-songwriter will be performing with their own backing
band. Scheduled Performances: 9:00 p.m. - Amer Diab - Drawing comparisons
to Elvis Costello, Wilco, and Ron Sexsmith, Amer Diab's music is a blend of
rhythms and simple twang. Amer's first solo release, 2003's The Year of the
Apology (featuring members of Broken Social Scene) enjoyed serious critical
acclaim. 10:00 p.m. - Violet Ray - Singer/songwriter Violet Ray's debut CD
Good Things was released on her own label, Climb-it Records, receiving
airplay in Canada and Australia. Violet has showcased her original songs at
Nashville's famous Blue Bird Cafe, as well as Bluebird North (with the
Songwriters Association of Canada) and the Glenn Gould Studio Stage in
Toronto. She was nominated for the Rising Star award by the Ontario Country
Performer and Fan Association 11:00 p.m. - Jim Armstrong - For almost
four decades of his remarkable, musical life, Jim Armstrong has lived with,

Brian Gladstone Plays in Oakville - March 5, 2006

The Smoking Guitars of Brian Gladstone with Tony Quarrington come to the
Moonshine Cafe, Oakville Ont, March 5, 2006.

Brian Gladstone's rise from a basement demo, to the world stage in a few
short years has been deemed as remarkable. Now, with four critically
acclaimed albums to his credit - all receiving global airplay - Gladstone is
described as 'Seeing things through irony and old time approach reminds one
of great artists as John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, and Mississippi John Hurt. He
is their own true son and he continues their great sounds ...'. A
multi-award winning world-class fingerstyle guitar player, insightful
songwriter, dynamic performer and visionary of our times, Brian Gladstone's
philosophical lyrics, 'high-on-life' attitude, and extreme musicality can
mesmurize and captivate any audience. Touring with JUNO winning producer and
guitar master Tony Quarrington, the duo has been often been referred to as
'flying fingers' and 'smoking guitars' for their speed picking and
six-string-syncricity, and their ability to play as if they shared the same
brain. Don't miss the music and magic of Brian Gladstone with Tony
Quarrington at the Moonshine Cafe on Sunday March 5, 2006.
