Initially recognized by Toronto audiences propelling the David S. Ware Quartet (Next Wave), and baptizing the What.Next era leading his own trio w/ William Parker and Susie Ibarra into sold out/SRO landmark gigs at 179 Richmond Street – NY’s pugilistic pianist Matthew Shipp of late renowned for his signature Thirsty Ear Blue Series portfolio – returns in an absolute centre ring concert in the lofty acoustics of St. George-the-Martyr.

Matthew Shipp's piano playing has been called "apocalyptic" (Jazziz), and "like looking up suddenly and discovering a solar eclipse" (Village Voice). The New York Times calls him "the most significant pianist in avant-garde jazz since Cecil Taylor." An architect of often dramatically-layered improvisations, Shipp creates ecstatic music that has found fans in the unlikely parallel worlds of jazz and alternative rock. His recordings on (former Black Flag vocalist) Henry Rollins' 21361 label helped expose Shipp's contagious energy to listeners beyond his jazz loyalists, a wave of releases on the Hat Art label, Aum Fidelity, ECM (w/Roscoe Mitchell Nonet) plus his 1999 Thirsty Ear debut and nurturing of the Blue Series secure his place among the most adventurous spirits in the music today.

Mr. Shipp has ranged far and wide, embracing everything from modern classical music, funk, electronica, avant-garde jazz, ambient music and hip-hop to good old hard bop. He has been a prolific collaborator, most often with fellow David S. Ware Quartet member William Parker, and also with a long list that includes Mat Maneri, Wadada Leo Smith, Roy Campbell, Roscoe Mitchell, DJ Spooky, Spring Heel Jack, and many others. from Parry Gettelman, The Dallas Morning News

"I think in big, sweeping landscapes." says Shipp, who feels his reputation as an avant-garde player is unwarranted. "I like to consider myself at the forefront of the language and I try to be free, but I don't think of myself as someone like a Cecil Taylor. I'm just trying to be me. I'm as concerned with the melodic as I am with being in the vortex of a whirlwind."

One is the latest title in the Blue Series that Shipp started at Thirsty Ear in 2000 when the rock indie music.monstersandcritics.com formed a jazz division. "Peter wanted a different approach, so he brought me in." says Shipp, who came to Thirsty Ear's attention after recording for 21361 label, which is marketed and distributed by Thirsty Ear.
from Dan Ouellette, monstersandcritics.com Jan 23 2006

"Shipp unveil(s) his first collection of original solo material in nearly a decade. As such, One simultaneously serves as both a meditative re-centering and as a further departure, with Matthew quietly redirecting his familiar post-Cecil Taylor vocabulary towards a singular form of numinous chamber music."
Matt Murphy, pitchforkmedia.com - 31 Jan 2006

"Matthew Shipp is One impressive performer... Few listeners ever have encountered pianist Shipp the way they did Friday night at HotHouse: alone at a piano, improvising for more than an hour..."
Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune - 13 Feb 2006

FEBRUARY 22ND, 2006 - TORONTO - Sonic Deli Records presents a full night of
singer-songwriters, in support of Epilepsy Toronto. The benefit concert will
take place at Stone's Place (1255 Queen Street West) on Friday March 31st
and will feature the talents of five local musicians, including: Amer Diab,
Violet Ray, Jim Armstrong, David James and Rob Maurin. Music begins at 9
p.m., tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door. A non-profit community
agency, Epilepsy Toronto is celebrating their 50th Anniversary this March,
during National Epilepsy Awareness Month. The charity has chosen musician
Jim Armstrong to speak and participate in all promotional events this
spring. To raise awareness and educate the public, he will share his
difficulties in overcoming the obstacles of this potentially debilitating
condition. Jim Armstrong has struggled with severe epilepsy since the age
of six. Two years ago, Jim underwent state-of-the-art brain surgery to
reduce the intensity of his seizures and their frequency. Three months
later, he was at the soundboard working on his first CD compilation of
eleven Toronto songwriters and performers. Released in April of 2005, BROWN
BAG LUNCH also marked the launch of the independent record label, Sonic Deli
Records. Four of the eleven artists are back to donate their music for a
good cause. Each singer-songwriter will be performing with their own backing
band. Scheduled Performances: 9:00 p.m. - Amer Diab - Drawing comparisons
to Elvis Costello, Wilco, and Ron Sexsmith, Amer Diab's music is a blend of
rhythms and simple twang. Amer's first solo release, 2003's The Year of the
Apology (featuring members of Broken Social Scene) enjoyed serious critical
acclaim. 10:00 p.m. - Violet Ray - Singer/songwriter Violet Ray's debut CD
Good Things was released on her own label, Climb-it Records, receiving
airplay in Canada and Australia. Violet has showcased her original songs at
Nashville's famous Blue Bird Cafe, as well as Bluebird North (with the
Songwriters Association of Canada) and the Glenn Gould Studio Stage in
Toronto. She was nominated for the Rising Star award by the Ontario Country
Performer and Fan Association 11:00 p.m. - Jim Armstrong - For almost
four decades of his remarkable, musical life, Jim Armstrong has lived with,
and in spite of, severe epilepsy. Jim is the core of Sonic Deli (band,
label, production house); a multi-talented singer-songwriter. Jim's
melodies and lyrical imagery are reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen, John
Hiatt and Tom Petty. Jim has demonstrated his abilities as both an
accomplished multi-instrumentalist and a producer. 12:00 a.m. - David Janes
- A new face and new sound in the Canadian country/pop/rock music scene is
David Janes. With a unique voice and sound compared to Jon Bon Jovi, Bryan
Adams and Jim Cuddy. His successes include the title of Best Singer and
Best Stage Performance in the Canadian leg of the 2004 Emergenza
competition, in which he and his former band, RAR, beat out more than 6,000
others to go to Germany for the world finals. Now at 21 years of age and
embarking on his solo career. 1:00 a.m. - Rob Maurin - Singer/songwriter
Rob Maurin emerges from the country music closet this show, with a set of
Lyle Lovett–inspired pop. A regular Sonic Deli contributor (vocals, rhythm
guitar), Maurin is resuming a promising singing career. Notable performances
include an award-winning acapella quartet that included Jim (Barenaked
Ladies) and Andy Creeggan.

Brian Gladstone Plays in Oakville - March 5, 2006

The Smoking Guitars of Brian Gladstone with Tony Quarrington come to the
Moonshine Cafe, Oakville Ont, March 5, 2006.

Brian Gladstone's rise from a basement demo, to the world stage in a few
short years has been deemed as remarkable. Now, with four critically
acclaimed albums to his credit - all receiving global airplay - Gladstone is
described as 'Seeing things through irony and old time approach reminds one
of great artists as John Prine, Dave Van Ronk, and Mississippi John Hurt. He
is their own true son and he continues their great sounds ...'. A
multi-award winning world-class fingerstyle guitar player, insightful
songwriter, dynamic performer and visionary of our times, Brian Gladstone's
philosophical lyrics, 'high-on-life' attitude, and extreme musicality can
mesmurize and captivate any audience. Touring with JUNO winning producer and
guitar master Tony Quarrington, the duo has been often been referred to as
'flying fingers' and 'smoking guitars' for their speed picking and
six-string-syncricity, and their ability to play as if they shared the same
brain. Don't miss the music and magic of Brian Gladstone with Tony
Quarrington at the Moonshine Cafe on Sunday March 5, 2006.

With their mixture of traditional Chicago style Blues…a bit of old fashioned country…and, as always, a dopple of R’n’B…,they are a crowd pleasing, get your feet moving’, get up outta yer chair kind of band, no matter what or where they are playing. Thus making them “The Hardest Working Band in the GTA”. Now working on their fourth CD and playing many festivals in and around Ontario, come out and see why they have shared the stage with the likes of Downchild, Morgan Davis, Mel Brown,
Jack De Keyzer, Fathead, Jeff Healey and David Rotundo....and the list grows.

Johnny Max is a soulful singer whose respect, dedication and passion for music are evident. He is also a brilliant entertainer who has audiences thoroughly enjoying each show.  Johnny Max has been building up a solid reputation as one of those guys who gives 110% and is one of the most action-packed and satisfying entertainers around.  Johnny takes to performing like a fish to water, a perpetual motion machine, galvanizing his spicy blend of Stax/Volt, Atlantic, Funk, and Blues into frenzied heights, often propelling himself into the audience’s eager arms.

Kevin Higgins A professional for over 25 years, Kevin Higgins has performed and recorded with Morgan Davis, David Wilcox, Danny Brooks, Rita Chiarelli and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith.  He has also performed with Snooky Pryor, Little Mack Simmons and A.C. Reed among others.  A guitarist of astonishing abilities, Kevin understands the difficulty of translating the dynamism of what’s heard live to the confines of the studio.
Uli Bohnet Uli Bohnet has been a mainstay on the Toronto Blues / Roots scene for many years.  His tasteful and solid bass playing has caused him to be hired by great artists such as Paul Reddick + The Sidemen, Eugene Smith, Danny Marks, Chuck Jackson, Danny B, Barabra Lynch, Uncle Shecky, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Joe Mavety, Krista Blondin, The Dues Brothers, Virgil Scott, George Gao, Little Mack Simmons, Jay Douglas, and countless others.

Duncan McBain Drums started his professional career in the spring of 1980, going from a basement to an unrehearsed gig in Kitchener with the Good Brothers. He played with the Good Bros. for a year, along with Canadian Zephyr gigs in between. He then formed a band with Garth Bourne from Canadian Zephyr.  In 1984, a mutual friend introduced Dunc to Morgan Davis. His two years of playing with Morgan led to playing with Michael Pickett, Dutch Mason, Hock Walsh, and various members of the Downchild Blues Band.  While playing in the late 80s with The Headhunters, Dunc met Tom Barlow. After The Headhunters disbanded, Dunc played Top 40 and originals with Tom for the next 14 years.  Dunc is currently the drummer for Stratochief, The Johnny Max Band, The Grant Lyle Band, and The Vaughn Passmore Trio.

Release 2:

Montreal extreme metallers CRYPTOPSY have been nominated for Favorite Metal Artist as part of Canadian Music Week. The Indies, The 6th Annual Independent Music Awards, will be hosted by the Trailer Park Boys, and the awards will be presented at Toronto's The Docks on March 1st at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster or www.CMW.net.

CRYPTOPSY perform at THE METAL QUEEN MANAGEMENT CANADIAN MUSIC WEEK SHOWCASE on Saturday, March 4, 2005 at The Vatikan, 1032 Queen Street West, Toronto at 12:00 a.m.

CRYPTOPSY launched into the international metal scene following their Ungentle Exhumation demo release in 1992 and debut CD, Blasphemy Made Flesh (1994). Quickly signed to Sweden’s Wrong Again Records (who also discovered In Flames and Arch Enemy), the band issued the underground classic None So Vile (1996), which severely outclassed peers and resulted in the band being cited as having reinvigorated the style. Their intense energy and musical superiority led to their Century Media international record deal and also the American re-release of their previous two CDs. CRYPTOPSY also released albums Whisper Supremacy (1998), And Then You’ll Beg (2000) and None So Live (2003).

Once Was Not was released in October 2005, an album representing the band’s power and versatility. Lighting the album’s fuse is an acoustic/electric guitar intro entitled “Luminum”. Descending with whirlwind intensity, “In The Kingdom Where Everything Dies, The Sky Is Mortal” embodies the entire CRYPTOPSY experience: acid-jazz infused extreme technical metal, battle-honed guitar riffs, strategically supportive and deadly effective bass guitar, culminating in the omnipresent rhythmical onslaught from drummer Flo Mounier. Once Was Not demonstrates the licentious cohesion years of touring and performing has given CRYPTOPSY absolute supremacy. Hear why CRYPTOPSY are one of metal’s defining acts and why they have earned the nomination for Favorite Metal Artist.

CRYPTOPSY have toured across Europe, Canada, United Stated and Japan and have sold an excess of 275,000 albums.

“Extreme metal champions, the planet’s most technically proficient and mind-jarring death metal band.” (BW)

Del Rey & Steve James make Toronto
debut as a blues duo with a difference
at Hugh's Room concert Tues. March 7
Steve James and Del Rey call themselves "powerful exponents of American vernacular guitar playing" - and the self-description is absurdly accurate. Although known as blues players, they cheerfully tackle everything from old hillbilly music to deep country blues and witty original material.  They'll play a full concert at Hugh's Room, Toronto, on Tuesday March 7.
James, who's based in Boston, and Rey (from Seattle) have been colleagues and collaborators since 1992 and interrupt their solo careers to play as a duo at festivals and, occasionally, smaller clubs.
Rey first visited Toronto last year as a featured member of Maria Muldaur's band, but this is the Canadian debut of the pair as a duo. James plays mandolin as well as bottleneck guitar; Del Eey plays guitar and - believe it! - steel-bodied ukelele. They've recorded three CDs together.

Quotes:
Santa Cruz Weekly:
- "Their inventive shops are jaw-dropping and amazing, and they both pay healthy respect to the masters of old, without losing their collective musical identities which embrace a host of old-time genres."

Rootstown, Belgium: - "Concerts by this duo are unforgettable affairs. No studio tricks, no big production grandstanding: What you hear is what you get."
