mark's gigs - smokin' tunes at new venue, this saturday august 7th

Hi Folks

I'll be playing at a novel, new venue on saturday, august 7th: the
Village Vapor Lounge at Church and Wellesley in downtown Toronto. With
rare exception, this will be a regular saturday evening gig for me.

This non-licensed lounge is on the third floor at 66 Wellesley St.
East. Not licensed for alcohol, the lounge is licensed for personal
marijuana use, by patients of the medical marijuana compassion clinic
on the second floor, and - for a $5.00 cover - by any guests who'd
like to bring their own and inhale - legally! I'm not much of a smoker
anymore, but this would have been a great gig to have in my college
days. Or maybe not - sometimes I wonder how I finished the program,
puffer that I was.

Finding the Village Vapor Lounge can be a little tricky since, while
its address is 66 Wellesley East, the building on the corner of
Wellesley and Church has a #66B address painted on a door, leading you
to perhaps think the VVL is in that location. But it's actually
located on the third floor above the Ho's Team beauty salon in the
next building to the west, where the Medical Marijuana Compassion
Clinic is also situated on the second floor.

Big Blue X - New Song & Aug 8th show

Hi,

New Big Blue X song, Prepare For War (live recording), download it for free, it you like it forward this email to all your friends. And we have a gig scheduled for August 8th (details below).

It took a few weeks to write Prepare For War, it's one of our favorite songs to play, it's got a lot of melody. Initially we had about 3 songs worth of lyrics, Brian tossed most of them out and added some new ideas.

As you may know, we've been talking like idiots about recording - it's been a slow climb, the best we could do right now is to release a live recording straight off the mixing board. Prepare For War is from a gig we did in early June in a small pub in Toronto, it's a FREE download so don't be shy.

The mix is super rough but for now this should give you a good idea of where we're at - I did some mastering magic to even it out. The goal is to still get some better studio recordings.

We've got a gig scheduled for August 8th, Toronto (Dundas & 427) - it's an all ages gig, we go on at 2:30pm.

I hope this email finds you smiling, happy, healthy and excited for the summer season just days away, beautiful warm days are a rare commodity in Canada! I wanted to personally invite you to a very important event for me, as you know I have released my CD album "Jenikz" and had a very successful release in Guelph where I am now currently residing; but I missed out on your presence! Most from Mississauga could not make the trek out which is completely understandable, so I have arranged an encore performance cd release in the root of my home town "On the Cure" in Mississauga! Haley is the daughter of our good friend Sherry Champion Stewart.
Haley has an in-operable Brain AVM & one of her only hopes is to raise enough money for a trip to the USA to see if doctors at the Mayo Clinic can help save her precious life. An AVM is a tangle of abnormal and poorly formed blood vessels (arteries and veins). They have a higher rate of bleeding than normal vessels. AVMs can occur anywhere in the body. Brain AVMs are of special concern because of the damage they cause when they bleed. They are very rare and occur in less than 1% of the general population. AVMs that occur in the coverings of the brain are called dural avms.

Sherry is a single mom without the means or finances to take on such a huge undertaking & we are there for her to help in every way we can !!!

Big Blue X are playing a live acoustic show in a club near York University on Sat. Oct. 3rd. Gig details are below. We've re-written a few of our songs: Mother, All We Wanted Was the Truth, Your Light Pulses and War Pigs... so it will be new all over again.

We'll also hammer out a new song we just finished, "The Ocean is my Woman", and might squeeze in a cover of "Damage Done".

The discipline of photography, is finding hidden beauty in the visual realm we can see everyday. It is changing the way you see things in order to find the unique, the iconic, the visually intriguing. This is the true expression of what THE ART OF MUSIC VIDEO exhibition is about. We've all seen the music videos but to see them as still images, frozen moments, where artistic disciplines such as fashion design, art direction, lighting design, photography, and performance art collide to create stand-alone dreamlike realities can be breathtaking.

The gallery art show (JUNE 12 –19) will display blown up photographs of music artists, stills of music videos and raw footage video installations, to emphasize the artistry that goes into creating hip-hop, rock and pop music art. The show is intended to blur the lines between photography and filmography as it freezes moments in music videos, focusing the audience to the carefully constructed details that go into the production of these often discarded works of art. The important photographic elements of the music video that are present in most other forms of photography (setting, fashion, performance expression) will be given their due time to be thoughtfully deciphered and considered. For the first time in Music video history, the "music" will be separated from the "video" and be given its time to be observed for what it is, raw inspiration captured on film. The Exhibition will feature work directed by several visual Stylists associated with the NE INC. (the production company founded by RT! And his long time business Collaborator John Nadalin.) Some of the Featured Directors will be: Bruce McDonald, Charles Officer, MMVA nominated David Mewa, Marc Andre Debruyne, AND MMVA Nominated Cazhhmere.

The NE will be accepting donations to help support a local charity (REMIX PROJECT) that is an outreach to at risk youth.

Local Charity the Remix Project, an outreach program for at risk youth where RT! currently serves on the board of directors is a youth program that acts as an arts and cultural incubator in Toronto, Canada, North America’s cultural capital. "For more than ten years now, I've been hosting parties for young professionals in New York," Shapiro says. "My parties have really built up a name for me there, which is great, of course, but I always wanted the chance to do something new, something different. When the opportunity arose to host December's party in Toronto, I took that chance, and it turned out better than I ever imagined."

Shapiro is bringing his party back to Fluid Lounge, a leader and trendsetter of the Toronto nightclub scene since its launch in 1995. He has once again reserved a private back section exclusively for the guests of his party.

Co-hosting the Mid-Winter Bash will be famed Toronto nightclub "Scene Queen" Heather Cook from FAME:Us Productions. Cook captured the attention of the nightlife industry in 2007, when she discovered that what had once been a weekly "club posse" had developed into a devoted and quickly expanding clientele. "We had a great launch, but we're even more excited about this party, especially because we're joining forces with Heather," Shapiro says. RON HAWKINS celebrates release of 10th album

As one of the members of Canada's legendary indie band,
LOWEST OF THE LOW, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist
RON HAWKINS has enjoyed many accolades showered on that band
over the years. In 1996, 2000 and again in 2005, Chart Magazine
honoured the group's 1991 debut album, Shakespeare My Butt, with
spots in the top 10 of the Top 100 Canadian Albums of All Time alongside
Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and The Tragically Hip.

After a second Low album in 1994, the band parted ways and Hawkins
released a solo album and EP in the subsequent two years. Forming a
fast-
paced big band complete with a horn section, Hawkins released three
albums
with a new group THE RUSTY NAILS from 1997-2001, at which point the
call from the masses had to be heeded: the LOWEST OF THE LOW reunited
for a series of shows, a live album and a new studio album. Hawkins
started
tinkering on some of his own songs in the Low rehearsal space, playing
all the
parts and laying down tracks that would eventually become his 3rd solo
record, Chemical Sounds, being released January 19th, 2008, at the
Horseshoe.

Named in homage to the Toronto studio where the album was recorded,
Chemical Sounds is the last album ever recorded at the venerable
Chemical
Sound space, having since moved location and changed ownership.
Produced by Hawkins and Rudy Rempel, Chemical Sounds shows off
Hawkins' trademark range of style and emotion. He jotted down a list of
life
lessons for his baby daughter in "A Brief History," featuring the
in-utero heartbeat
of the as-yet-unborn Ruby B., to whom this album is dedicated.

"Sofa Star" is a punk-tinged rock track that tries to talk someone out
of
committing suicide, while other tunes bear a signature Hawkins social
commentary and that unmistakable, unduplicated voice. "Born To It"
shows that
he is just that, followed by the sure-fire hit "Anonymous," feathered
by strings and
piano showing a more mature and experienced man writing the songs now.
Don't worry, though - it still has a searing Hawkins electric guitar
solo in the middle of it!

Accompanying the new album will be an online diary for fans to hear the
genesis of each track, from the first chords to the demo to the final
version, under
the banner of Evolution Days, a section on <http://www.ronhawkins.com>
that
will be posted closer to the album's release date.

Since 2001, Hawkins has been working double-duty an artist, splitting
his time
between songwriting, performing, and making a living as a painter. He
sells
paintings all over the world from an artist collective web site that he
helped found,
called VictimlessCapitalism.com. Check out his samples posted there and
you'll find
some of Canada's rock who's-who, including great portraits like that of
Ian Blurton
who produced two of the Rusty Nails albums and the 2004 Low studio
album.
Hawkins is also currently in the studio producing fellow Low member
Steve Stanley's
next solo album, due out next year.

The Frode Gjerstad trio had their debut concert at the Nattjazz festival in Bergen, Norway in May 1999. Journalist Geir Dahle in Bergens Tidene wrote: "A possessing mind blow of music, a great kick!" Since then, the trio has toured in Scandinavia and played at festivals in Norway, Italy, Austria, U.S., and Canada, and have been highly acclaimed for their intense interaction, their high energy and their broad repertoire. The trios first CD "The Blessing Light" was released in spring 2001 by Cadence Records. Other releases are "Sharp Knives Cut Deeper" (with Peter Brötzmann) on Splasch, "Last First" on Falcata Galia, and "St.Louis" on FMR.

The trio's music has its roots in the free-jazz tradition, the way it was defined by Coleman, Mingus, Dolphy, and Coltrane. Although, the trio also takes inspiration from the European free scene.

Frode Gjerstad has for many years declared his enthusiasm towards small line-ups, and especially the trio. The trio line up gives space for the musicians, but is at the same time very dependent on the musicians' physics and musicality. Recently, he has worked in the duo format with, amongst others, Peter Brötzmann. With over 20 recordings as a leader, he has established himself as a major saxophonist on the international scene.

His trios have included Johnny Dyani, Kent Carter, John Stevens, William Parker and Rashied Bakr. In trio with William Parker and Hamid Drake, he toured the US in 2000. This is his first Norwegian trio.

Øyvind Storesund has emerged on the Norwegian scene as a bass player with extremely high energy and stamina. Taking inspiration from William Parker and Jamaaladeen Tacuma, and letting the two's styles work together, he represents a new generation of Norwegian bass players.

Paal Nilssen-Love is one of Norway's most active drummers, and has established himself as a powerful and a most dynamic musician, through regular collaborations with Mats Gustafsson (The Thing), Ken Vandermark (School Days), and Raoul Björkenheim, among others.

The Frode Gjerstad trio has toured extensively in Europe, USA, and Canada the fall 2002, including a European outing with Peter Brötzmann in the spring of 2003.

Lindsay teamed up legally by getting married last August, they changed
their names to GoodTimes in honour of the act they've been hosting for
several years, reflecting the fact that they literally live the
GoodTimes.

The European trio of Kaufmann/Gratkowski/DeJoode initiated their union at Zaal 100, Amsterdam¹s famed underground improvised music centre. The Tranzac serves as an equally respected facility for creative music in Toronto. The band has released two CDs, "kwast" (Konnex) and "unearth" (Nuscope). Their third, entitled "palaë", was released by Leo Records in October, 2007.

Pianist/composer Achim Kaufmann is based in Amsterdam, and has played and/or recorded with musicians such as Han Bennink, Michael Moore, Jim Black, Mark Helias, Tristan Honsinger, Lê Quan Ninh, Wolter Wierbos, Paul Lovens, and Joost Buis' Astronotes. Kaufmann previously released 'kamosc' (Red Toucan) with Michael Moore (clarinet, alto saxophone) and Dylan Van der Schyff (drums). He also performs solo.

Composer/multi-reedist Frank Gratkowski leads a quartet with Wolter Wierbos, Dieter Manderscheid, and Gerry Hemingway. He recently performed at various festivals with his Double Quartet and has worked with Georg Graewe, Joëlle Léandre, Hamid Drake, Peter Kowald, Misha Mengelberg, Michiel Braam, and many more. Both Gratkowski and Kaufmann have received the renowned German SWR award.

Wilbert de Joode, the veritable research scientist of bass pizzicato and bowing techniques, is a self-taught musician, and currently one of the most sought-after bassists in the world of contemporary jazz and improvised music. He is a member of the Ab Baars Trio, the trio Fuhler/Bennink/DeJoode, Apa Ini, and various groups led by Michiel Braam. He has played with Steve Lacy, Fred Frith, Derek Bailey, Peter Brötzmann, Sunny Murray, The Ex, and the Schlippenbach Trio, and completed a solo North American tour earlier this year, which included an AIMToronto Interface session.

Wodwos is a local quartet whose music combines the controlled focus of composed forms with the raw spontaneity of free improvisation. Utilizing limitations suggested through composition, the band members seek to push past their own habitual musical tendencies and individual syntaxes. Since its formation Wodwos has performed original compositions, free improvisations, and music by Webern. They have performed in diverse settings from bars and lofts to a below-ground plaza, a giant tent on the shore of Lake Ontario, and under a Parkdale bridge. Wodwos are planning to record and release their first record in the early months of 2008.

On November 22, I'll be singing with my old friend and colleague Ian Tamblyn, to celebrate the release of his most recent recording, Superior: Spirit and Light.

I'll be racing back from Kitchener/Waterloo, where I've got a rehearsal with the University of Waterloo Orchestra, so I'll be a little late, but don't let that slow you down.

Ian is one of the most eloquent evocateurs of the Canadian spirit, with an uncanny ability to describe our external landscape. He expresses "Canada" from its most ephemeral and elusive, to its most craggy, vast, and windswept. If you don't know his work, or have never been to a show, I guarantee you'll enjoy his well-travelled perspective, his humour, his poetic imagery, his storytelling, and his musical breadth. Fred Guignion and I played together for a decade with our band Fat Man Waving - he is one of my favourite guitar players. He and I have performed extensively with Ian, over many miles and many years. And Anne Lindsay is a great, much celebrated player. The four of us were most recently together a year ago August, in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, where we conducted our second music workshop for kids there.

I am pleased to announce the release of Superior: Spirit and Light, the first of four CDs called the Four Coast project. Lake Superior and Northwestern Ontario is the focus of this first CD in the series. In the next two years, I will look at the Pacific Northwest coast, The Arctic, and the Labrador/Newfoundland coast.

I chose to begin with Superior because that is, in many ways, where my creative and musical journey began, and the reference point for all subsequent journeys. I grew up in Fort William and camped on the shores of Thunder Bay, and had a relationship with the lake, but I rediscovered its power, its vastness, beauty, and spirit when I began canoeing the north shore in the early 1970¹s. This was also the time when my musical journey began.

Now, some thirtyfive years later, I am going back. I think it is time to present a body of work that has emerged regarding the big lake and its surrounding environs. Though I will continue to present other journeys - both inner and outer - I feel a compulsion now to gather together this collection of songs that have dotted various albums and CDs, but never together. As I wrote these songs over the years, they were always part of an ongoing story, connected chords, and plotlines. It was also a chance to re- record some tunes that have grown or morphed over the years, present some of my favourite work on the topic by others, and also bring several new songs to the studio.

The second reason for presenting Superior: Spirit and Light, at this time, is to focus attention on the lake and its surrounding communities .These communities are suffering from the depletion of natural resources, fluctuating lake levels, a continued neglect of First Nation reserves, in fact, a general neglect of Northwestern Ontario. At times, I feel this stunning part of Canada seems far more remote and removed than anywhere else in the country. It seems to me many of the towns along Superior¹s north shore will soon be ghost towns. It makes me sad and angry to bear witness to these events.

When I grew up in Fort William (Thunder Bay), I came to believe it was one of the most dramatic and dynamic towns in the world . There were all kinds of comings and goings, it was in the centre of North America, it was at the head of the Great Lakes, and it was an international port; ships from all over the world visited its waters. It had a dynamic history, and it was at the centre of Northwestern Ontario¹s seemingly endless natural resources. It hummed with a rough industrial energy. It was also in the middle of nowhere - long stretches of highway and rail - days from other towns of any size. This isolation also contributed to the creative dynamic I felt existed there. It still does, though the dynamic now threatens to be more entropic as Fort William fades and withers.

And then there was the lake - at first threatening, dark, and dangerous - but as I came to know its shoreline - powerful, awe inspiring, inspirational, and spiritual. As I explored further, I came to realise that others had also found power and inspiration in what Glenn Gould came to note as this "Idea of North" reverence of the lake by First Nations, the voyageurs, the Group of Seven, Bill Mason, Wayland Drew, Norval Morrisseau... What was the haunted quality of Superior¹s north shore, and why was it so compelling? Was there some spirit of north that simply existed in the rock and trees, lakes and vistas of the north shore? In the midseventies I started playing folk festivals, and discovered kindred spirits in Northern Ontario in the likes of Andre Paiement, Marcel Aymar, Robert Pacquette, Robert Dixon, Daisy DeBolt, and CANO. They were writing about the same spirit, the same energy. All these things lead me on a long journey, seeking out the places where the spirits of the north and their attendant stories seemed to burst from the rocks, lakes, and trees.

From Lake Superior, the journey continues to the Northwest coast of British Columbia, Haida Gwaii, the Gulf of Alaska, the Bering and Chukchi Seas, the Northwest Passage, Ellesmere, Baffin, Hudson Bay, Greenland, Swalbord, Spitsbergen, Franz Josef Land, Torngats, and the Labrador coast. Chasing the north is what this four coast project is all about. I hope you will enjoy the journey.

BILL WOOD of EYE EYE releases solo album

Toronto-based singer/songwriter BILL WOOD has traveled
a long and winding road to pop stardom and back again.
With his second solo album just released, he has come full-
circle as a musician and a staple on the Canadian music
scene. Here's a little history lesson for the young 'uns:

BILL WOOD rose to prominence in the mid-1980s with the pop
rock band EYE EYE, garnering two Juno nominations and radio
hits across the country. Over the course of 30 years, Wood has
maintained one foot in the proverbial music industry door, constantly
writing songs, while raising a family, starting his own home renovation
business and running a homeless shelter and food bank for street
kids in the "real world."

Born in Montreal, he picked up a guitar at age 10 after seeing
The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. Wood moved to Burlington,
Ontario, for high school, forming a glitter band called Palace Laundry
with Wayne Cass (now a noted jazz musician) and Mark Caporal,
who would later go on to play drums in Eye Eye. After high school, he
toured with a cover band then traveled to England and witnessed the
punk movement first-hand. He came home and put together a group
called the Oh-Nos, who came in second in Q107's very first Homegrown
battle of the bands contest. Touring alongside other local talent like
Teenage Head in the early '80s, the Oh-Nos spent 3 years on the road.

From there, Wood started a band called Billy Club, who opened regularly
for Eye Eye, a project that Wood's former band-mate Caporal and
guitarist
Andy Ryan had put together. In 1985, Wood joined Eye Eye as the singer
and landed a record deal with Duke Street Records. In 1986, they were
nominated for Most Promising Group and their producer, Terry Brown, was
nominated for Producer of the Year for their debut album, Just In Time
To
Be Late. The songs "Out On A Limb," "X-Ray Eyes," "My Sensation," and
"Endless Night" became ubiquitous on Canadian household radios, and
Eye Eye toured with Glass Tiger, Honeymoon Suite, Gowan, Images in
Vogue and Platinum Blonde, which Wood says was akin to touring with
The Beatles in those days!

When Eye Eye broke up in the late '80s, Wood launched a successful
home renovation business, married and raised two daughters, worked
on other people's albums, released two albums with his early '90s
group Ghosttown, then put out a solo debut in 1996.

A decade later, Wood began writing again and bartered with his friend
Tim Abraham, who owned a recording studio. In exchange for installing
an exhaust fan and some carpet, Wood was able to demo a couple of
new tunes. And they haven't stopped flowing since. His new album,
Take It, is an alt.country pop rock piece of Canadiana, based on Wood's
personal experiences of love and life. "I'm in all of these tunes, but
they're not all about me," says Wood. "I wanted to have that classic
'70s rock vibe with a full band. I like Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and
Englishmen, The Faces, The Band... that sort of energy."

Featuring Abraham on guitar, Mark Duff (Atomic 7) on drums,
Rob Clark (Rizdales) on bass, Dennis Kelde on organ and
accordian, and Bob Egan (Blue Rodeo, Wilco) on pedal steel and
lap steel, it's easy to compare BILL WOOD's new solo album to
Canadian icons like Blue Rodeo, Neil Young or Bruce Cockburn.
His songwriting is timeless, he has a knack for a great melody line,
and his voice is comfortable and confident, not forcing you to listen,
but bending your ear with his laid-back tone and that thing that only
comes with age: experience.

"I'm not on any great mission," he says. "It's just that the songs keep
coming and I wanted to do something about it! There's definitely some
mojo at work when we're gigging and it's fun!"

BILL WOOD celebrates the release of Take It with a residency at
GRAFFITI'S in Kensington Market on the last Thursday of every month.

graduated from L'Ecole supérieure de théâtre in Montréal in
2004. As a newcomer to the stage, he caused a sensation
with starring roles in the French-language productions of
Rent, Beauty & The Beast and A Chorus Line. Yvan toured
Europe and Québec with the folk opera Un Eternel Hiver
produced by Lydia Lemay. He takes time off from his coveted
lead role as Galileo in the classic rock opera We Will Rock You
in Toronto to join THE CANADIAN TENORS for three shows
in Québec City, Montréal and Toronto.

GIORGIA FUMANTI is an Italian opera singer who now makes
her home in Montréal. She was chosen to sing at the Closing
Ceremonies for the Special Olympics in Shanghai, China, last
week immediately after finishing a mini-tour opening four shows
for Zucchero in Canada. Giorgia is a soprano whose voice will
add a beautiful texture to some of the Christmas classics with
THE CANADIAN TENORS.

The Times Colonist in Victoria, BC, said after the group's first show
of the tour in October that, that "these four fine-voiced fellows are
appealing because they're funny, relaxed, and spending the
evening with them is like hanging around old friends - who can
really sing!"

The CANADIAN TENORS will be releasing their debut album
in December, and it will include the song "Because We Believe,"
co-written by David Foster and Andrea Bocelli, and performed
by THE CANADIAN TENORS for the first time at the opening
of the new Crystal Wing of the Royal Ontario Museum in June.

THE NEWS is a new name for a new band assembled for the EUROPEAN JAZZ MEETS CHICAGO component of the 2007 Umbrella Music Festival in Chicago. Percussionist, presenter and curator Mike Reed (who was at the Guelph Jazz Festival in September with Exploding Star Orchestra) has invited Nate McBride to join him in collaborating with Boeren and Fuhler at the Chicago Cultural Centre where they share the bill with five other acts, including Czech Republic¹s Iva Bittova who precedes them by two nights at the Gallery in Toronto. The NEWS' Rough Idea/Music Gallery performance in Toronto is part of an eastern NA tour; upon their return in December, they will tour Holland.

Eric Boeren made his first steps in music with the brassband of Ulicoten, a small village in the south of Holland. He played solo euphonium, then moved over to the Eb tuba. He liked the bizarre look of a sixteen year-old carrying that immense horn at the rear of the band. Being lazy and not willing to count out the multiple bars of having nothing to play, he started to listen to the interplay of melody and counter melody for cues to come in on time. At eighteen, after attending his first concerts of improvised music, he switched to cornet, his first love. He attended workshops at Amsterdam¹s Bimhuis, and developed his interest in melodic shapes, musical cues, texture and sonority. In the following ten years Boeren played with the Maarten Altena Ensemble, Willem van Manen¹s Contraband, Ab Baars Tentet and the Paul Termos Tentet. He joined Available Jelly, and became a member of J.C. Tans and his Rockets, Sean Bergin¹s MOB and Frankie Douglas' Sunchild. He holds the chair of second trumpet and soloist in Michiel Braam's Bik Bent Braam since 1990. He formed the Eric Boeren 4tet which features Ornette Coleman¹s compositions alongside Eric¹s own pieces. As a composer, Boeren has contributed to the repertoires of Available Jelly, Bik Bent Braam, Big Band Nieuwe Muziek, JC Tans and his Rockets, Sean Bergin's MOB and Mobette and of course his own quartet. He is also composes for special proejcts, such as Eric Boeren Double Quartet and Eric Boeren Guitar Band.

Cor Fuhler began playing the piano, organ, and self-made instruments at the age of six and graduated in '89 from the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. He began exploring music in groups such as Carduelis Carduelis and Wayang Detective (a combination of improv, gamelan and shadow puppets). He formed the trio Fuhler-Bennink-de Joode that is still active. Another important project was Olympicnic: a theatrical concert about technological extremes: super 8 films, live finger cameras, powerbook, modular synths, shadow play inside the grand piano and turntables. ConundrumCD, a mini label, provides an alternative avenue for exploring compositional ideas by "computer dubbing" of various musical materials. The Corkestra and Cortet are two of his most recent initiatives. His interest in the possibilities of extending the piano sound has led him to collect and build various acoustic instruments (keyolin), and to work with electronics. Depending on the situation, he mixes these in different installations and scenarios. Groups with which he is involved include Palinckx, Mimeo (with Jerome Noetinger, Keith Rowe, Peter Rehberg, Phil Durrant, and many others...), the Flirts (with Gert-Jan Prins), Monitor (with Michael Moore and Tristan Honsinger), and Delius-Lovens-Fuhler (with Tobias Delius and Paul Lovens).

Nate McBride has played the bass for nine years. He did some formal study, and taught himself a good deal. He leads his own rock and jazz groups and records and performs regularly with some of the standard bearers of second-century jazz and improvised music. Among the musicians with whom he has worked in close association are Joe Morris, Pandelis Karayorgis, Mat Maneri, and Ken Vandermark. Nate has performed or recorded with many others, including Joe Mcphee, Foyd Standifer, Clark Terry, and Paal Nilssen-love. Mike Reed is a musician, composer and presenter based in Chicago. As a drummer, Reed has been part of the vibrant Chicago jazz and improvised music community since 1997. He has performed regularly with David Boykin, Nicole Mitchell, Jeff Parker, Axel Doerner, Josh Abrams, Jim Baker, Rob Mazurek and others. As a leader Reed has released two critically acclaimed albums by his cross-genre group The Treehouse Project, and, more recently, the debut recording of his quintet Loose Assembly and a record of improvised duets. He currently is a member of The David Boykin Expanse , Rob Mazurek¹s Exploding Star Orchestra and Josh Berman Quartet. For nearly a decade Reed has also established himself as a presenter of musical performances. In 2001 Reed founded the Emerging Improvisers Organization, a not-for-profit whose weekly series of jazz and improvised music has been lauded as one of the finest in the Midwest. In December 2005 Reed was named among the Chicagoans of the Year by The Chicago Tribune for his work as lead organizer of the Intonation Music Festival.

Kyle Brenders is a young Canadian composer and saxophonist. His compositions are boundless, containing a broad range of idiomatic allusions. As a saxophonist, Kyle is comfortable in all forms of musical experiences ranging from solo improvised works to large ensemble compositions. His current compositional output explores the interaction of intentionality and surprise, the liminality of notation and improvisation, and the experience of duration. He has studied composition and improvisation with Peter Hatch, David Mott, Malcolm Goldstein, Jean Derome, Alvin Lucier, Ron Kuivila and Anthony Braxton. He is currently completing his Masters in Experimental Music and Composition at Wesleyan University. Kyle attended the inaugural Vancouver Creative Music Institute where he worked with George Lewis, Francois Houle, Miya Masaoka, Evan Parker, Mark Dresser, Nicole Mitchell, and Giorgio Magnanensi. He has performed with Guillermo Gregorio, The Anthony Braxton Sextet, Diamond Wall Trio and Alvin Lucier. Kyle has had pieces performed by the FLUX quartet, The BSC, sfSound and the Windsor and Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. He has performed in the Vancouver Jazz Festival, the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, the Open Ears Festival of Music and Sound, the Guelph Jazz Festival, and with NUMUS concerts. Kyle is an active member of the Association of Improvising Musicians, Toronto (AIMT). Brenders has just released a solo saxophone album called Flows and Intensities. Dear friends,

We have all read about the City's plan to expropriate the famed Matador club
and turn it into a parking lot.

I don't want to talk about the failings of Toronto's planning department,
nor do I wish to talk about how this City Council has failed to seize
opportunities to improve our city. I don't want to even talk about the
Matador. I want to talk about Ann Dunn, the owner of the Matador, and how
this city has singled her out and bullied her in order to steal her life's
work. All in our name, and all for the sake of a parking lot.

I want to talk about how Ann had to find out that the City was planning to
expropriate her business and home from a news reporter. No official
notification, just a call frfom a reporter.

I want to talk about how the city ignores it's own official plan to reduce
parking, and how senior city officials extol parking lots as future
development sites and then make deals with condo developers.

I want to talk about how a grandmother is fighting this injustice alone.

The local councillor tells us that the Parking Authority is an independent
agency and that he is not a bully. The rest of council say that they are not
to blame and nor are they bullies. The Mayor also tells us that he is
looking into it and that he is not a bully. Yet they voted unanimously to
allow the Parking Authority to steal Ann's life. When you support a bully
you become a bully.

Ann is standing alone against all these bullies but I ask you to stand with
her and stand up to the City and say enough is enough. That this is wrong
and we will not allow you to bully us any longer.

Please join me tomorrow (TODAY - TUESDAY) at 4 pm at City Hall in meeting
Room B for the Board meeting of the Toronto Parking Authority. Make your
voice heard to help Ann and our City.

The trio have been heralded in publications ranging from People to Paper, Nylon to The New York Times. Blender has had them on their Hot 100 list and Leigh Lezark was one of New York magazine's "Most Influential New Yorkers" in 2006 as well one of Spin Magazine's "Top 25 Under 25."

The Misshapes are Greg Krelenstein (26), Leigh Lezark (23), and Geordon Nicol (23) the trio behind the groups‚ eponymous Saturday-night party as well as trendsetters in their own right. The Misshapes phenomenon began in February 2004, when their weekly party, which many now consider the best in hipster Manhattan, opened it's doors for the first time. It's a teenage rock 'n' roll dance party for young people in their late teens and early twenties, and it's been going strong ever since. They have managed to become an intersection of music, art, and fashion and aside from their weekly night, they have provided music for a range of events hosted by institutions like the Whitney Museum and Museum of Contemporary Art to fashion world powerhouses like Chanel, Versace, and Calvin Klein. They have assembled this collection of portraits, edited by Misshapes member Geordon Nicol, as a document of their unique world.

The portraits include cutting edge musicians, celebrities, artists, and designers, some from different generations, alongside the youth of down town New York. Madonna, Yoko Ono, Michael Stipe, Axl Rose, Kelis, Peaches, Hedi Slimane, Michel Gondry, Nan Goldin, Sienna Miller, Chloe Sevigny, Bloc Party, My Chemical Romance and many others are included. With each subject posed amidst the downtown scene's dense and riotous environment. The contributing photographers also include some of the art, fashion and rock world's biggest stars like Karl Lagerfeld, Ryan McGinley, and Nick Zinner.

The Toronto book launch event will take place Thursday Sept 6th, Fly Nightclub (8 Gloucester St) with fashion icon Sophie Lamar hosting, DJ set by The Misshapes , Sebastian Grainger (Death From Above 1979), Jackson Pollis, Crystal Castles and featuring a surprise guest! MARATHON

Metal Queen Management (MQM) is pleased to announce
that MQMusicFest 2007 is being held on Sunday, August
19, 2007 at The Phoenix Concert Theatre, 410
Sherbourne Street, Toronto. This year's festival — the
2nd annual, following up 2006's successful debut — is
a 12-hour rock music marathon, kicking off at 12:00
noon and lasting non-stop until 12:00 midnight.

MQMusicFest will showcase the very best of Canada's
up-and-coming, as well as established, musical
talents. This year saw over 60 bands apply through
Sonicbids to play MQMusicFest, yet only a select few
were chosen. Artists confirmed to date include:

Christine Tier makes music that's a blend of sultry, irresistible songs that seamlessly shifts between smooth jazz, folk, and thoughtful alternative pop. She launches her self-titled CD with a band of first-rate Toronto musicians at the Rivoli tomorrow (Wednesday May 23).

That she mixes a deeply-felt musical sensibility with a career as a lawyer seems to work for her - as if the heart controlled the music, and the brain her application of the law. It's never that simple, of course, or so clearly defined.

Laughingly, she tells friends that she needs a new career every decade, and if reality might obstruct that dream, she's determined to be the very best she can be at both professions. This, she figures, could be the start of new career.

The UKs Buck Brothers Banned in the USA!...
No Such Trouble Anticipated at Torontos NXNE Music Festival

On their first visit to Toronto, the band was nominated for Best
International Artist at the Toronto Independent Music Awards. Buck
Brothers' Andy Duke also presented the Best Alternative Artist award at
the ceremony. This time around, they return to town for three shows in two
days.

The Buck Brothers will be performing their official NXNE shows June 9th and
10th with a full set on the 11th as well: The first show is Friday night at
Ye Olde Brunswick House the Buck Brothers Headline the evening at 11:45;
Saturday's show is at Rancho Relaxo around 10pm; You can also get Bucked
at The Bovine Sex Club, 10pm the following night, Sunday, June 11th.

The Buck Brothers is pop music at its purest evolution- pop music as it
should be, incredibly catchy and at times addictively hummable. Their debut
album, Me (Back2Forward), is testament to this and should be listened to
loudly and while driving in a convertible at high speeds, if at all
possible.

THE BLOOD LINES - NEW BAND, NEW CD, NEW TOUR

THE BLOOD LINES - TORONTO, ON @ KATHEDRAL JUNE 13

We started playing together late in 2005, but there was a line-up
change, etc. and we officially formed and named the band in March of
2006. It's wierd to think that was less than three months ago,
because since then we haven't stopped working.

The night we named the band was the same night we bought the domain
www.thebloodlines.com and set up a myspace account that simply said
"Songs coming soon". The foundation was in place and the next day we
began booking this tour for June that is taking us all the way to
Toronto and New York and back. We were setting up a deadline for
ourselves, hoping we'd make it.

Once we had the booking underway, we decided we should probably play a
show and test the waters. So we lined up a show locally for May 6th
that would be our first show ever. It ended up being packed and the
reception was great. Since then, we played one other show with The
Constantines and Chad VanGaalen (May 19).

We knew we wanted an album by the time we cast off for tour (June 2nd)
but as of May 8th, we hadn't begun recording it yet. So, we got to
work. Doing everything ourselves, we recorded, mixed and mastered a
12 song album in a period of 9 days. During the mixing, we were still
coming up with ideas and quickly adding the final touches as we rushed
to meet the deadline that would allow us to get the CD back from the
manufacturer in time for our tour. Somehow, after all the rush, we
were all 100% happy with our work - a little delirious from lack of
sleep (22 hours straight mixing) - but nonetheless satisfied and
gratified.

This week leading up to our departure will entail folding, gluing,
stamping and stuffing cardboard CD cases and sending them off to
various locations across Canada (let me know if you'd like one), while
we prep our van for tour. I forgot to mention we booked the whole
tour without a mode of transportation. We assumed we'd be able to
find a van in time, but it was getting REALLY tight. Two days ago our
luck pulled through and we found the perfect tour van for $800. It's
true that energy through a system will cause the system to organize
itself.

Now, we can't wait to play. Here are the tour dates.

"The Novelist" - Swift's highly acclaimed, succinct, eight song, nineteen minute and thirty-eight second-long, audiophile archivist experiment - immediately ushers the listener deep into the recesses of Swift's creative core for a kaleidoscopic trip aboard an intergalactic vaudevillian steamship with a speakeasy code-word. Yet, "The Novelist" is only one small manifestation of Swift's entire musical manifesto and only one-half of this double-disc set. "Walking Without Effort" - the second disc in the two-disc set - is the first, and perhaps most deceptively complex, yet decisively understated, Swift release to date. The UKs Buck Brothers Banned in the USA!...
No Such Trouble Anticipated at Torontos NXNE Music Festival

On their first visit to Toronto, the band was nominated for Best
International Artist at the Toronto Independent Music Awards. Buck
Brothers' Andy Duke also presented the Best Alternative Artist award at
the ceremony. This time around, they return to town for three shows in two
days.

The Buck Brothers will be performing their official NXNE shows Saturday,
June 10th; the first at Rancho Relaxo around 10pm, with an expected late
night show at High 4 Records Showcase Night (2am) TBA. You can also get
Bucked at The Bovine Sex Club, 10pm the following night, Sunday, June 11th.

The Buck Brothers is pop music at its purest evolution- pop music as it
should be, incredibly catchy and at times addictively hummable. Their debut
album, Me (Back2Forward), is testament to this and should be listened to
loudly and while driving in a convertible at high speeds, if at all
possible.
